Augments the Archetype
Tom from Galway, 18 Feb 2011
I went to see this in the cinema for two reasons; firstly the Coen brothers and secondly Jeff Bridges (who I thought was great in Crazy Heart). I have seen the John Wayne version a couple of times, so expected most of the main plot points.
Riffing on themes of responsibility, a moral code that recognises that which is wrong in and of itself rather than simply illegal, the nascent nationhood of post Civil War America, capitalism as a driving force in America and so on the Coens have made a film that looks like it will join The Searchers, The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Unforgiven as examples of how Westerns should be made.
Although I have not (yet) read the book the synopsis would be better described as the Coen Brothers take on the Charles Portis novel to which it is more faithful, rather than a remake of the Wayne classic.

True Grit

I thought this film was a let down, the acting and story was not as good as expected considering the oscar hype around this film. I found it slower paced than expected and never really felt a connection with the charecters.
Matt Damon as you have never seen him before, dont think this is his genre.

Excellent film in the style of "The assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford": realistic (gunshots *really* make you jump) but also beatiful. Great dialogue (turn on subtitles to work out what jeff bridges is saying), looks beautiful, great acting - the plot keeps your interest. The end isnt great, I suppose. Dialogue was the standout for me - nice archaic-type language & very witty.

Rent this

I feared this movie would be hyped up, and not live up to my expectations, but Jeff Bridges and his young female co-star put on an excellent show here. Good story, fast pace, and an interesting insight into the times it was set in. The dialogue of Mattie Ross is fantastic, and although I found Cogburn difficult to understand at times, he was a great character as well. Well worth a watch.

Good western style movie

Jeff Bridges plays the meanest bounty hunter in his town. He's recruited by a young girl to kill her father's murderer and that's the gist of the story. It's a well made film with very good acting and an interesting plot it's just not quite brilliant. If you liked "Unforgiven", you should enjoy this too.

True Regret

I was in tears watching this movie, tears of boredom, watching grass grow would have been more entertaining, I'm amazed at the amount of positive reviews.
Hailee Steinfeld is amazing as the 'hell-bent on revenge' kid for the murder of her father.
