Loss and liberty
Philip from Dublin, 23 Sep 2009
This is the first of the directors famous 'trilogy' based on the French flag. The story follows a woman who has lost her husband and child in an accident as she goes from blank denial to a slow, gradual acceptance of her need for a new life. But whats important in this film is not what is said, but how it is said. It is a true masterpiece, with astonishingly beautiful scenes where music and cinematography merge together to mesmerizing effect. Strongly recommended.

Fine acting from Binoche, in an ultimately uplifting film. Beautiful music at the end, too.

as a lover of slow moving films with non obvious story lines this one was excellent. Beautiful imagery and very subtle.

In getting out this film i was trying to see if i could broaden my horizons. I now realise i can't. I thought it was toooooo slow, no real plot. Couldn't figure out story. Nice blue colours though. I won't be taking out the 2nd and 3rd part of trilogy.

Not for Everyone
Liam from Kilkenny, 19 Mar 2010
I loved it but my partner Kate hated it and fell asleep! As a study of dispair it didn't cause the viewer to join in (happily) but instead to be intrigued by its progress. Beautifully filmed and expertly acted. A classic of the genre in every way.

Gloomy French movie
Stiofan from Clare, 11 Mar 2012
The fact that the film is all French with sub-titles did not bother me too much. But there is a lot of misery and little excitement in this one. We did not like it.
