Oscar-winner Tommy Lee Jones directs and stars in this poetic and striking modern-day Western scripted by Guillermo Arriaga (Amores Perros, 21 Grams). Peter Perkins (Jones) is a veteran cowboy who embodies the values of the old West, living in a small Texas town bordering the U.S. and Mexico. He hires Melquiades Estrada as a ranch hand and quickly befriends the man. But when Estrada is gunned down under mysterious circumstances, Perkins takes justice into his own hands and kidnaps a trigger-happy border patrolman (Barry Pepper), forcing Perkins to unearth Estrada's body and accompany Perkins on horseback on the long and treacherous journey through the frontier mountains and back roads of Mexico to bring his friend's body home.

10 out of 100 Unnecessary discomfort
Mark from Wicklow, 16 Apr 2007
Although this film does have a good story to it and is well written, (see synopsis), there are a few things that might consider you to think otherwise about renting it. We all feel uncomfortable with sex scenes while watching it with the person/people you least would want there in such a circumstance, and this film is chock full of em! I wont go into details but it really ruined it for me as some of the scenes did not bare the most attractive of people, and had nothing to do with the film. Avoid

35 out of 100 Hard.
Ciaran from Dublin, 23 Apr 2007
Tommy-Lee vows to take his Mexican cowboy friend home to bury him and discovers some oddities along the way. A cold and hard modern western, this is probably not for everyone with its slow deliberate pacing but is rewarding for patient viewers. Annoyingly leaves a few ends untied though.

35 out of 100 Interesting movie
John from Dublin, 13 Dec 2007
Interesting movie that rolls along slowly but has some nice moments. Tommy lee jones just manages to sell his more-sympathetic-than-usual role of a rancher trying to do right by his friend Melquiades, an illegal immigrant working as a cowhand, who is mistakenly shot by a law officer. I found that the non-linear order in which the story unfolded was a bit overdone but the overall movie was still good to watch. Worth a watch.

40 out of 100 3 Burials
Tim from Cork, 25 Oct 2007
Fairly impressive low budget production. Quite memorable but don't expect anything too exciting, this is a very subtle, visual film. Speaking of visual, the scenery and cinematograpy is breath taking. Also, great to see Levon Helm in film again...

40 out of 100 Tommy Lee Jones crafts a memorable film
Maura from Galway, 18 Jul 2007
A compelling film about the journey of redemption of an unwilling man. The message is never rammed home, but shown in an understated fashion. A measured film with a strong sense of place and character.

20 out of 100 The fourth burial was Tommy Lee Jones career!
Brian from Cork, 28 Sep 2007
Poor, dull movie which left little to be admired, basically telling the story of a murdered mexican cowboy and his three burials, and about his friend Tommy Lee Jones trying to find out why he died, who did it and returning his body to his homeland. Not a classic just a boring watch. T L Jones really needs to make better movies than this.
