Thirty-five-year-old Bardem plays 55-year-old Ramon Sampedro, a Galician who broke his neck as a young man and has spent more than a quarter of a century as a quadriplegic, confined to bed. Reflecting on his past and considering his future, he chooses to die, petitioning the courts for permission to be euthanised. His radical decision sets off controversy throughout Spain as well as in his own house, where his family and friends all have different opinions on the fate he has chosen.
While Ramon's father (Alberto Gimenez) and brother (Celso Bugallo) refuse to help him die, and his nephew, Javi (Tamar Novas), tries to understand his uncle's decision, Ramon is surrounded by women who virtually fight over him - Rosa (Lola Duenas), a single mother of two who visits him to talk about her difficult life; Manuela (Mabel Rivera), his sister-in-law who takes care of his daily needs; Gene (Clara Segura), who works for the Death with Dignity organization; and Julia (Belen Rueda, in a powerful film debut), a married lawyer with a secret of her own.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Venice Film Festival, 'The Sea Inside' is a special film with marvelous acting, a strong soundtrack, a moving story, and an enchanting visual style that features poetic shots of the countryside as Ramon dreams he can fly.

How can a movie about euthanasia be anything but morbid and dreary? Well, check this one out for the answer. This is a fantastic, light and uplifting tale of a man who just wants to move on from this life. He attracts characters to him that he doesn't not necessarily want but they lighten up the whole show. Highly recommended for any lovers of fine drama. Rent this and you wont be disappointed.

Life is a right, not an obligation!

The movie IS great!!! Excellent cast and story!!!
It didn't just start and finish , but it actually went through my heart. I think this movie brings a lot of moral self-questioning and understanding of one's life importance. It's so deep emotionally that i think you really need to be prepared for movie like this.

Thought this was great. Have been meaning to watch it for ages, but it's not easily available. Javier Bardem is excellent & moving as a quadraplegic fighting for the right to euthanasia. Based on a true story. Great acting all round. The subtitles aren't off putting as they can be in some films. Highly recommended.

Excellent movie about a man who became quadriplegic 30 years before and has spent years fighting for his right to end his life legally. Not at all intense but a well made movie about the emotions and attitudes of friends, family and strangers.

A girls movie

You will like this if you are a girl and enjoyed movies like "Not without my Daughter" and "I know my name is Stephen". Generally hopeless stuff made to make people cry.
