40 out of 100 Amazing performance from Kate Winslet
laura from Dublin, 18 Jun 2009
Overall, despite the unsavoury topic, you really feel for Winslet's character. Excellent portrayal of complex and flawed characters by all involved. Highly recommended.

15 out of 100 Slow
Annien from Dublin, 05 Jun 2009
Kinda slow, rent something more uplifting instead, boy reads to woman, a bit of sex, then throw a couple of Nazi's in the mix. Stir! Done!

45 out of 100 oscar worthy!
Linda from Cork, 30 Jun 2009
This was a great film, one of the best I have seen this year. It's a story about an erotic affair that turns to love and how innoncence is lost. it is not about the Holocaust, but about the generation that grew up in its shadow, which is what the book insists as well. I would recommend it with a large box of tissues!

45 out of 100 Really very good
Michelle from Galway, 30 Sep 2010
I had my doubts about this movie at the beginning. Lots of sex and not much dialogue. But then it unexpectedly got a lot lot more interesting. I thought the acting was brilliant and the story was very satisfying, even though I saw the twist coming a mile off. Highly recommended.

0 out of 10 Boring
Mary from Dublin, 02 Aug 2009
I found the overall story very boring, slow and stupid. certainly not one of Kate's great works and not worthy of an Oscar. I had heard so much about it, and now so glad I didn't waste time and money going to the cinema to see it. a thumbs down for me!

50 out of 100 Perfect.
John from Donegal, 10 Nov 2009
A teenager has an affair with an older woman, who then disappears from his life, until one day.... An amazing film and a well deserved Oscar for Kate Winslett. Fantastic acting all round. A lesson on how to make a film.

45 out of 100 The Reader
Joy from Dublin, 17 Feb 2010
A fairly sombre film but that is not a reason to pass it up. It is a fascinating story with two unexpected twists about half way through. Kate Winslet gives a wonderful performance in the central role and is well supported by Ralph Fiennes and the young man whose name escapes me. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a first-class drama.

25 out of 100 Disappointed
Valerie from Kilkenny, 25 Feb 2010
I was really disappointed in this film, it was totally over-hyped. The story is dragged out and a little frustrating at times. However, I am a big fan of Kate Winslet and thought the acting was good. Don't build youself up for a great evening's viewing!
