From writer/director Stephen Gaghan, winner of the Best Screenplay Oscar for Traffic, comes Syriana, a political thriller that unfolds against the intrigue of the global oil industry. From the players brokering back-room deals in Washington to the men toiling in the oil fields of the Persian Gulf, the film's multiple storylines weave together to illuminate the human consequences of the fierce pursuit of wealth and power. As a career CIA operative (George Clooney) begins to uncover the disturbing truth about the work he has devoted his life to, an up-and-coming oil broker (Matt Damon) faces an unimaginable family tragedy and finds redemption in his partnership with an idealistic Gulf prince (Alexander Siddig). A corporate lawyer (Jeffrey Wright) faces a moral dilemma as he finesses the questionable merger of two powerful U.S. oil companies, while across the globe, a disenfranchised Pakistani teenager (Mazhar Munir) falls prey to the recruiting efforts of a charismatic cleric. Each plays their small part in the vast and complex system that powers the industry, unaware of the explosive impact their lives will have upon the world.

35 out of 100 Syriana
Alan from Donegal, 21 Apr 2007
This was an excellent movie if somewhat confusing at the beginning and maybe a bit slow moving. But once we had replayed parts of it, it all became clear! A very disturbing movie considering the present relationship with the US and certain countries.

35 out of 100 Worthy....and worth a watch
Brian from Dublin, 13 Nov 2007
This film is extremely ambitious in seeking to expose the interests that cover politics and power in DC, CIA interference in geopolitics, oil companies investing in America and China, and the succession to the throne of a gulf state. Does it pretty well, but is confusing for large parts - not because one lacks patience as it is all drawn together, but rather that it jumps around too much before giving enough information. Jeffrey Wright is excellent, GC great as ever, great ensemble cast.

40 out of 100 Syriana

Slow to get going but builds up to a powerful and impacting finale. Really opens your eyes to the depths the US have sunk/continue to sink to in the hunt for oil.

if you want to just relax and watch a movie don't choose this one. absolutely brilliant performances from start to finish but very intense and heavy going.a lot of balls being juggled in the air at the same time.none the less at the end you do feel as if you've just witnessed an excellent movie.i'm a person that believes corruption is rife everywhere so this movie didn't tell me anything i don't already suspect,it just confirms it.it's a fly on the wall documentary showing the real u.s.a

40 out of 100 Political drama that makes you think
Patrick from Tipperary, 12 Jul 2007
This film addresses the ethnic issues of oil consumption, with a story line that is reminisent of Traffic, it cuts between the various characters who all tie in to the plot. Not a fast pasted action by any means but rather an enjoyable thought provoking film that addresses many of the ethics involved with the price of oil.

40 out of 100 Syriana
Mary from Cork, 23 Nov 2007
A long drawn out sad and complicated movie. Worth a watch if you are interested in mid East stories. Violent but what else could it be? I lived for 8 years in Saudi Arabia and having spent a lot of that time with saudi royalty, I thought the characters and the ending especially believable.I just got out in time myself in June 2001, only 3 months before September 11th. I have first hand knowledge of the Saudi ways. I enjoyed this movie. How I miss the desert and the Sunshine. The memories...

35 out of 100 Intriguing if a Little Disjointed.
Liam from Kilkenny, 11 May 2010
The patchwork approach to making this film was a bit frustrating but fine acting and great photography made up for that. Having to wait until the very end for all the parts to come together (if it was somewhat expected)required patience but the patience paid off. The action scenes are gripping but realistically shot and happily lack bravado as so many of these do. I liked this movie from beginning to end.

35 out of 100 George Clooney in a beard
Justine from Meath, 26 Jul 2008
This is a very picturesque film that does not rely on the script to carry its heavy message, which exactly is what I'm not sure, but it is strikingly well shot. I like George but then what redblooded female doesnt. One of a rash of films concentrating on the middle east or other deserty countries with subtitles and inscrutable facial expressions .
