Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20-million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Intrigued by Jamal's story, the jaded police inspector begins to wonder what a young man with no apparent desire for riches is really doing on this game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the inspector and 60 million viewers are about to find out.

Definitely worth all the hype.It wasn't what I was expecting but nonetheless a good film.It had the quality of a documentary and one's sympathy with the main characters was whole-hearted.It's easy to forget just how poor some people are and while this film deals with the issue it doesn't patronise those people.I think everyone should see this film.From so many negatives comes so much hope.

A feel good masterpiece

After dark pieces of work like Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and 28 days later, Danny Boyle has once again successfully turned over to the good sight of the force. This is truly an epic and a masterpiece and I dare you not have a smile on your face when the credits go up for one final time. On one hand the poverty is quite depressing and disorientating but on the other, you have a work of beauty and sheer happiness. It's this contrast that makes it such an enjoyable masterpiece. I was expecting this to be a story about a poor guy who goes on the show and ones and how this changes its life but it is far more inventive than that! The film basically flashes back through the guys life during the questions in the game and shows how he knew the answers while also telling a really interesting life story. Would definiltey recommend very entertaining but said at times, it captures you from start to finish

Oh this so deserved the Oscars it got! So so so very brilliant! Fab soundtrack, brilliant acting & great direction from Mr Danny Boyle. Sometimes when films go from the 'current' to 'history' it can be very confusing, but with this it was flowing from one to the other, thanks to a great director! The two main actors were absolutely fabulous! Went out and bought the film & soundtrack!

As you know it is never good to first read the novel and then watch the movie. If you only see the movie then you would be satisfied with a good movie. It is not close to the book at all. But still wonderful to see Bombay and the slums and the people. Some episodes are filmed acurately. Good acting . Enjoyed the movie despite reading the excellent book it was based on.
