On a quest to solve a string of mysterious and brutal murders, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his trusted ally Watson (Jude Law) plunge into a world of dark arts and startling new technologies, where logic, and a good right hook, are the best crime fighting weapons. Explosive action, baffling mystery and astonishing intrigue follow the two in a race to uncover and foil a terrifying plot that threatens to destroy the country. Director Guy Ritchie helms the all-action adventure reintroducing the great detective to the world. Robert Downey Jr. is the new Sherlock Holmes!

25 out of 100 Too long and Not Sherlock Holmes
Ken from Louth, 15 Aug 2010
When I realised that Guy Ritchie had done this I knew what to expect; lots of cartoon violence, slow-mo action, explosions and all rest we get from blockbusters these days. While Downey gets it fairly right, the plot is really an excuse to set up a new Sherlock Holmes franchise. Check out the far better recent BBC TV remake. For me this is a run of the mill popcorn-fest which runs out of steam somewhere round the 40 minute mark and then frantically pads itself to a bloated 2 hours plus.

45 out of 100 Very Enjoyable
Sharon from Galway, 19 Sep 2010
Really enjoyed this Movie - eventhough I had expected something totally different & Dark. Downey Jnr was fantastic as Holmes, a new, fanciful, Sherlock Holmes- one I would never have associated with the character - but perfect for the role - even a bit Matrix style! Jude Law & Rachel Mc Adams- Fabulous! They made the movie complete - the perfect trio. This movie is suspenseful, very, very witty & you will want to watch right to the end - and want it to continue on further....

Rosemary from Clare, 03 Aug 2010
I was looking forward to seeing this movie and wasn't at at all disappoited. It was a great story and Robert Downey Jnr and Jude law had the most amazing on-screen rapport together, they were just superb. Its a movie I'd definitely watch again, am looking forward to the sequel. Guy Ritchie is a genius after this!

35 out of 100 Pleasantly surprised
Nicola from Leitrim, 29 Jun 2010
I wasnt sure if i was going to like this film but was pleasantly surprised. I love Robert Downey and he didnt disappoint. Not really a fan of Jude Law but he was good enough. Nice bit of action and nice to see a different era. Overall a good film.

40 out of 100 Sherlock Redux
Tom from Galway, 10 Feb 2011
If you like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (although take it from me the comics are better than the film), this should be right up your street. A fresh take on the Holmes canon, with less emphasis on patronising explanations post fact and more on pacy interaction with the seemy side of British society (both upper and lower) and a vaguely homoerotic sub-plot (does he/doesn't he?). Even Watson has been injected with some life, and vices to match. Plenty of action, humour and adventure for all here, and throw in the (relatively) convincing CGI'd London of Victoria, it is all in all an entertaining way to spend two hours. P.S. you'll never miss the deerstalker.

5 out of 100 Over hyped way too long complete rubbish
Mark from Dublin, 03 Feb 2011
Ritchie is well past his best now another dog all too predictable style that didn't work let time out for him. Downey and lw ok but practically no on screen chemistry. Cant help think that this was an excuse to kick off a trilogy of movies in the Sherlock holmes genre. About the only good bit cgi image of London bridge, and probably because I realised at that point the misery was coming to an end. You couldn't pay me to watch this again. Way too long to finish off.

25 out of 100 Disappointing
Cliona from Cork, 25 Apr 2011
Guy Ritchie attempts to reinvent Sherlock Holmes, and fails. it's a criminal waste of an opportunity, particularly given the presence of RDJ, who is an inspired choice for Sherlock Holmes. I can watch boats exploding (and any number of other noisy, badly edited action sequences) in plenty of other films, that's not why I want to watch Sherlock Holmes. It's not dreadful or anything, but it's just ... disappointing.

35 out of 100 Sherlock Holmes
Hugh from Wicklow, 10 Jul 2010
A strange interpretation of sherlock holmes and dr watson. more like a victorian batman and robin. enough action here to keep attention. and well set up for a few sequels.
