Lust, Caution is the new film from Ang Lee, Director of Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The film is based on a short story by the revered Chinese author Eileen Change
Shanghai, 1942. Mrs. Mak, a woman of sophistication and means, walks into a café, places a phone call, and then sits and waits. She remembers how her story began several years earlier, in 1938 China.
She is not in fact Mrs. Mak, but shy Wong Chia Chi (Tang Wei). With WWII underway, Wong has been left behind by her father, who has escaped to England. As a freshman at university, she meets fellow student Kuang Yu Min (Wang Leehom). Kuang has started a drama society to shore up patriotism. As the theater troupe's new leading lady, Wong realizes that she has found her calling, she is able to move and inspire audiences - and Kuang. He convenes a core group of students to carry out a radical and ambitious plan to assassinate a top Japanese collaborator, Mr. Yee (Tony Leung). Each student has a part to play; Wong will be Mrs. Mak, who will gain Yee's trust by befriending his wife (Joan Chen) and then draw the man into an affair. Wong transforms herself utterly inside and out, and the scenario proceeds as scripted - until an unexpectedly fatal twist spurs her to flee.
Shanghai, 1941. With no end in sight for the occupation, Wong - having emigrated from Hong Kong - goes through the motions of her existence. Much to her surprise, Kuang re-enters her life.

lust caution
Nuala from Dublin, 18 Sep 2008
It’s slowly paced throughout but interesting for the most part. However the sex was way over done and not at all “sexy” I was very disappointed in the end because it just sort of fizzled out and you never really got to know what the relationships were about. I think sketchy would best describe it and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you like ugly kinky sex cos there plenty of that! Get “Assembly” instead cos there is a least a real story with it!

Engaging & enjoyable
Helen from Dublin, 19 Jun 2008
I thought there was great connection between the protagonists in this film & was engaged in the story throughout. Was surprised in retrospect about all the hype regarding the sex scenes - they weren't on for too long & fitted in with the story line, so not gratuitious in any way!

Fan of Ang Lee, but this was lacking.Good to look at, but just missing something at its heart. As for all the noise about the 'action scenes' - they don't really add/detract from the film. So, fails both with a bang and a whimper

Artful WWII drama.
Ciaran from Dublin, 02 Sep 2008
A detailed and skilfully-made WWII drama which focuses on the Chinese resistance in the face of Japanese occupancy. We don't see much of the Japs at all as the attention focuses on the interactions between the Chinese who opposed the invasion and those who made hay from the situation. Some controversy about the risky scenes but I don't see what the fuss was about so don't rent for that reason alone.

boring and dragged out
noreen from Cork, 01 Aug 2008
the subtitles were difficult to follow in the first scenes as they were very busy scenes. The story dragged on and I couldn't wait until the end. The only good thing about the film was that it was visually pleasing, however, I didn't find it entertaining.

The plot was fairly predicable, it was not for me.

Not bad
Maggie from Mayo, 03 Feb 2009
A bit over-long, parts of it could have been stripped out, but basically interesting enough. The knife murder seemed pretty realistic and gruesome, not the usual "stab someone anywhere and they die instantly." For the most part the sex scenes were necessary to the film to show the inner characters of the people and the developing relationship between them. Maybe one or two less wouldn't have hurt. Just about kept my interest all the way through.

Okay, enjoyable

You will have to some kind of speed reader to be able to follow the sub titles and after a while my eyes were tired from the exhertion on top of that this is quite a long dragged out affair I fell asleep twice which says a lot although I did enjoy the film overall.
