With THE EXORCIST, William Friedkin (THE FRENCH CONNECTION, THE BOYS IN THE BAND) rivals Hitchcock for heart-stopping terror in this deeply horrifying masterpiece that led to religious boycotts, fainting and nauseous audiences, and a commercial success that forever changed Hollywood. Linda Blair plays Regan, a 12-year-old girl possessed by the devil. After exhausting all the options of science, psychology, and medicine, Regan's mother (Ellen Burstyn) realizes the supernatural nature of her daughter's condition and resorts to a religious solution, turning to Father Karras (Jason Miller) for an exorcism. Aided by the mysterious Jesuit exorcist Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), Karras must confront not only supernatural phenomena but also his own inadequate faith and displaced guilt over his mother's recent death, a personal torment Regan uses to manipulate him, but with disturbing results.

50 out of 100 Do you believe in evil?
claire from Westmeath, 31 May 2007
Based on actual events, The Exorcist is a truely terrifying movie. It calls us to examine our beliefs and asks us to make up our own mind about the existence of good and evil. The music and the simple but effective special effects create a chilling atmosphere which will stay with you long after the movie has ended. The ending is the most challenging part of this film. Has evil really won out? Here's one movie I dare you to watch alone in the dark. Just what is that noisescoming from the attic?

maedbh from Limerick, 12 Oct 2009
Watched this before when it came out first, had completely forgotten about it. Watched it the other night, wow, it is amazing. 25yrs on and the effects which are primitive compared to todays movies are so effectful. I found myself covering my eyes and leaving the lights on all night. Watch this, its a must

30 out of 100 Dissapointed
Susan from Donegal, 22 Jun 2010
I expected to be scared from start to finish, but sadly, I was not scared at all! I thought that it was very slow to get started. It was alright when it did get going. I think that this is over-rated, but it is weird if it's really is true!
