Not since G.W. Pabst's 1956 effort, 'Letste Akt' (The Last Act) has a German film attempted to tackle the subject of their most famous leader, Adolf Hitler. Breaking a long-standing taboo, the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, has made a film that has sparked much debate in Germany and the rest of the world. Downfall features an astonishing performance by Bruno Ganz as history's most notorious figure. Providing an unprecedented and controversial insider's perspective, the film is a gripping insight into the madness and desperation of Hitler in the final hours of the war as the Russian Army closes a ring around Berlin. Beautifully photographed and brilliantly acted, this tour de force is at once dramatic, harrowing and remarkably authentic.

45 out of 100 Definitive

What can best be described as the definitive report of what went on in Hitler's bunker in the days leading up to the arrival of the Reds. Brilliantly acted and presented, the fear, paranoia and claustrophobia are all represented and this is compelling viewing from start to finish. WWII history fans will love it.

50 out of 100 How come the Germans make the best war films?
Brock from Limerick, 14 Feb 2011
Brilliant BRILLIANT film! This actually transcends the medium, in that I don't feel I watched a film, rather that I was a fly on the wall in an epoch making of human history. There is no cloying sympathy, and no judgement passed which must have been staggeringly difficult to do given the subject matter. Brilliantly acted, we are given a real insight in the maddening affair, this becomes my first 10 star! The final line of the film is stock docc footage whereby we are told that "to be young is no

50 out of 100 Magnificent

You know the story. But it's still a bracing, surreal experience to see it depicted with such harrowing conviction. Watching this, it's still hard to believe that the Third Reich really happened, that people were so gullible/complicit/both, and that it all finished in such brutal squalor. See it for yourself. A masterpiece.

40 out of 100 Gripping
Cathy from Kildare, 20 Jan 2009
Well acted (in Bruno Ganz's case, extremely well acted) and interesting depiction of the last days in Hitler's bunker. The claustrophobia is perfectly captured, and pace is good. Only complaint is that the last half hour feels a bit flabby compared to the raw tension of what before...highly recommended
