More than 20 years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable -- he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

50 out of 100 One of the best SF since years.
Marcin Wilczynski from Louth, 08 Sep 2010
I've watched this with jaw on the floor. Greatly combines an ambitious content with impressive form. This is a picture intriguing, engaging, precise operating understatement, pushing to think. In addition, the rich in a perfectly executed action scenes: ravishing gunfire, chases and dynamic thrusting explosions in the chair. Metaphorical tale from the times of apartheid and racial segregation in South Africa. especially for fans of the Second World War and the Holocaust (not difficult to see th

25 out of 100 Very mixed feelings on this
Ken from Louth, 28 Jun 2010
The first 30-40 minutes documentary style are terrific and very engaging. The trouble is when the film tries to tell the story and you realise that there really wasn't much of story and it's been done many times before so much better. The basic idea of Johannesburg being selected is played on very nicely, although it is obvious from the budget why. True it has its splatter effects which will endear it to some viewers. Overall it falls too far short on story, much of which is bad B-movie sci-fi.

45 out of 100 Excellent.
Alan from Dublin, 19 Jan 2010
Didn't know what to expect with this but was really surprised. A different kind of alien movie, one that has an underlying theme of refugees and how they're treated. But don't let this put you off as this is a belter of a sci-fi movie. The alien special effects are brilliantly done and a fine performance from the lead actor will keep you entertained till the end. Make sure you see this.

40 out of 100 An interesting visit to District 9
Pauric from Donegal, 19 Jan 2010
The mock-doc style at the beginning of the film really works well in getting the viewer to connect to the story. The strong acting performances help keep the story moving along at pace. I wouldn't considering myself a huge sci-fi fan but this film was certainly enjoyable with an interesting story and an interesting take on alien films in general. Highly recommended.

30 out of 100 Bizarre but Enjoyable
Jason from Dublin, 27 Jan 2010
Not what i expected. For me this movie was a mix between "the Fly" movie meets an episode from the original Star Trek TV series. Although District 9 deals with an array of serious issues i couldn't help but laugh out loud at the cheesie dialogue. Our reluctant hero reminded me of an Inspector Clouseau as he fumbled and stumbled his was to his destiny...

35 out of 100 Sci fi where you wouldn't expect it
Stewart from Dublin, 29 Jan 2010
'cos its set in South africa & not LA or New York this film has an interesting premise. Comparison with apartheid era a bit crass in parts but enjoyable non the less. The fact that aliens are prone to same vices as use re-freshing.
