'The Deerhunter' is an astonishing, powerful and vivid epic about three men, steelworkers from Pennsylvania, whose lives are changed irrevocably in the tragic devastation of the Vietnam war. When Michael, Steven and Nick are captured by the Vietcong, they are forced to play Russian Roulette by their brutal captors, who make bets on their survival. The experience of capture leaves them with terrible physical and spiritual wounds and when Michael returns to Saigon to fulfil an old vow to one of his friends, he makes an unexpected, horrific discovery. Director Michael Cimino's The Deerhunter won no less than 5 Oscars in 1978, for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing and Best Sound.

25 out of 100 The Deer hunter
Steven from Dublin, 07 May 2007
This movie adeptly portrays how Vietnam affected the ordinary people who fought it and who DID NOT fight-which is a slant I had not seen before. No doubt, it is a pretty gloomy movie-but the actors make up for that. Everyone looks so young in it. However, my favourite 'Nam movie is Platoon, so I'm giving this a mediocre rating-but a classic to rent nonetheless!!! Contradicting myself??

45 out of 100 Riveting viewing
Thomas from Kerry, 28 May 2011
I really enjoyed this movie. One of the best wedding scenes(it is what I thought to be a greek orthodox wedding but the synchronised dancing is class and the bad luck that comes when the bride spills a drop of wine from the matrimonial chalice. The relationship between Nicki and Micheal(De Niro) is well played and their Russian roulette scenes are very nail biting(for instance Micheal helps the prisoners escape from a vietnames POW camp with a 16.67% survival at one point) The movie ends after another of these riveting scenes and it was well worth all those oscars

25 out of 100 What can I say
David from Dublin, 11 Sep 2007
Can't say I'm a fan, maybe I didn't relate to the characters or got bored with the huge amount of setup in the begining or just didn't "get" it. It's a long watch but I can't rate it too highly.

It's easy to forget how good this film is. If you haven't seen it for a while, give it another go.
