This great highly acclaimed film, winner of the Best Foreign Language film Oscar in 1989, can now be seen in the Giuseppe Tornatore's original vision - the Director's Cut. Salvatore, a successful film director, returns to his native Sicilian village for the funeral of his old friend Alfredo. He was the projectionist at the local Cinema Paradiso where Salvatore spent the happiest times of his childhood and developed his love of film. To the fatherless young boy Alfredo became a father figure who guided and loved him. His return also brings back poignant memories of his teenage love, Elena, whom he had to leave in order to pursue his dream.

Saw it when it came out first and really enjoyed watching it again. Set in Italy a generation ago but didnt feel old or out of date. Great cinematography, a classic I think.

People shy away from sub titles...why? YOU ARE MISSING BEAUTIFUL MOVIES!!!! This is appealing to men and women.touches the heart on human relationships and not to be sad when you loose a friend or loved one.we are all here to meet people and share experiences no matter what age we are or where we are in life.

excellent film - bit too long towards the end. Has a touch of Before/After Sunset with the alternative ending. Definitely worth the effort.

15 out of 100 Dated Badly
laura from Dublin, 08 Dec 2009
Just read the reviews whereby people mention this is the directors cut - didn't notice this when renting and wish that I had! I had lovely memories of this movie and was looking forward to see it - but coming in at under 3 hours, this is a tough slog to get through - the child actor is adorable, but the acting of the other leads is melodramatic and the film seems to have dated badly in the 20 years since release. Although maybe my opinion would be different if I saw the original. Screenclick

Why change something as perfect as the original-the greatest movie for film and cinema lovers ever? The Director's Cut is too long with un-necessary scenes-a futile exercise in self-indulgence! Please stock original and bin this version!!!

25 out of 100 Don't rent this Director's Cut -watch the original
Cathy from Kildare, 27 Mar 2009
I adore this heartwarming movie - but watching it as a director cut it gets bloated and self indulgent especial at the end...very disappointed as I was watching it with someone else I had raved about it to, and they ending up hating it!!! I give the original cut full marks, but the extra (and pointless!) scenes halved my enjoyment!

50 out of 100 Essential viewing for any cinema fan
Ronan from Westmeath, 26 Sep 2008
This a superb film from start to finish. A love story is intertwinded with the love of film in the 1950s. The story is simply yet powerful. Great music from Ennio Morricone punctuates the film throughout. Although the film is long, this is the directors cut, I was enthralled from start to finish. A classic.
