"Brothers" tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirty–something Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are polar opposites. A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace (Natalie Portman), with whom he has two young daughters (Bailee Madison, Taylor Grace Geare). Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who‘s always gotten by on wit and charm. He slides easily into his role as family provocateur on his first night out of prison, at Sam‘s farewell dinner with their parents, Elsie (Mare Winningham) and Hank Cahill (Sam Shepard), a retired Marine.
Shipped out to Afghanistan, Sam is presumed dead when his Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains. At home in suburbia, the Cahill family suddenly faces a shocking void, and Tommy tries to fill in for his brother by assuming newfound responsibility for himself, Grace, and the children.
When Sam unexpectedly returns to the States, a nervous mood settles over the family. Sam, uncharacteristically withdrawn and volatile, grows suspicious of his brother and his wife. Their familiar roles now nearly reversed, Sam and Tommy end up facing the ultimate physical and mental challenge when they confront each other. In the shifting family dynamics, who will dominate? And how will the brothers come to terms with issues of love, loyalty, and manhood – and with the woman caught between them?

OH MY GOD!
Timmy from Cork, 03 Jul 2010
I love this film! I rented it before reading the reviews but watched it anyway. I was literally at the edge of my seat (bed) watching it! Maybe it's just me, I don't know but it was awesome! Jake Gyllenhaal is hilarious! I'm still laughing at the bar scene!
All I can say it give it a try! Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't, but It's definately one of my favourites now! Not too much action, not too much romance but it still works! I really think everyody should see this at least once! Give it

At least Ben Affleck wasn't in this...

Movie Executive 1: "Let's make a movie showing the harsh reality of war, the impossible decisions people must make in order to survive, and the struggle those lucky enough to make it through have when integrating back into normal society"
Movie Executive 2: "That sounds great, but it might not resonate with all our target demographics. Can we shoehorn in a pointless love angle, and maybe a black sheep turned good storyline?"
Movie Executive 1: "Fantastic! In fact, let's make those the central

Haunting movie
Martina from Tipperary, 06 Oct 2010
Not a fan of war movies but this one really got to me. Very well acted by all, especially the eldest daughter, she broke my heart, she was amazing. Toby portrayed the messed up in the head soldier brilliantly, it really brought home what family life is like before and after someone returns from war, how you can really lose someone even if they don't die. Jake as cute as ever, a good movie overall and well worth the watch.

Human cost of war
Eddie from Kildare, 08 Aug 2010
Excellent portrayal of the hidden cost of war on combatants and their families. Well told and shot. No gung-ho heroes here. If anything it exposes the futility and cost of the Afghan conflict. Toby Maguires portrayal of the returned GI suffering from post traumatic stress is haunting and sad.

Oscar rated acting
Barry from Kerry, 24 Jul 2010
This film has some of the best acting I've ever seen. The two small girls would put many adult actors to shame. The story line is also excellent and delves into some of the things families have to deal with when someone in the family is at war. A must see!!

Mediocre
Olivia from Tipperary, 15 Jul 2010
I was really looking forward to this film, because of a very good cast. Unfortunately, it lacked depth for me. The actors weren't really pushed to the top of their game.

Hoped it would be better
Ken from Louth, 05 Aug 2010
One thing about Jim Sheridan is he seems to gets so much from child actors and this is no different. That aside this was a little unsatisfying. The three main characters and especially the blank-faced Tobey Maguire are excellent. However the film does fall a little flat with the transfer of the storyline from the original Danish film to a story Americans would "get". It has some nice moments, is well directed and fairly enjoyable but you can't help feeling there's something missing

Wow - top notch in all respects
Patrick from Wicklow, 16 Feb 2011
Fantastic film. Beautifully directed and great casting and production. From the first moment you know it's going to be something special and it doesn't disappoint. So difficult to articulate all that's great about this film so I won't even try. Just watch it ... if you appreciate any depth in a film you'll enjoy it.
