 Being There

Peter Sellers stars as Chance, a dapper, mentally deficient gardener who has spent his entire life in the home of a rich recluse. He has learned of the outside world only through television and speaks in minimal, easy-to-digest sound bites. When Chance steps out into the world for the first time, though, his idle sayings are interpreted as philosophical wisdom by a wealthy industrialist and, soon after, swallowed whole by the American public to the point where Chance becomes a media celebrity...

40 out of 100 Classic Sellers
Ciaran from Dublin, 27 Apr 2007
Sellers waited a long time to get his favourite book put on film but in the end he succeeded. He plays a man who has spent all his formative years in one house but when the master of the house dies he has to venture out to the big bad world which he has only experienced on TV. Sellers is excellent and the whole movie is a labour of love and it shows.

50 out of 100 Classic film that is both motivating and inspiring
Declan from Galway, 07 Jan 2009
A great film to watch that shows the real behaviours that we all possess.... will make you laugh as well as cringe at his ominous behaviour. The start is kind of slow but necessary for the remainder so don’t lose interest too fast... a great film for a night in and for those who like films that leave you a with a new perceived outlook on things even be it strange and weird... truly stands the test of time but dont let that fool you as it comes across as be made recently and been set in that time

20 out of 100 Let it stay there.

This is one of those once great 70's films that now seem dated. It will appeal to a certain type of fan so rent it if it's been recommended to you. For the more casual film-seeker, I'd go somewhere else. Sellers' Stan Laurel accent is uncanny though.

Beautiful and subtle and moving. well worth a watch. Peter Sellers is great in it, does vague and empty looking very well! ending took me a bit a aback but I think I see what they were getting at.

Story of innocence and love. Slow to start though but you really get to love the main character Mr. Gardner. Would highly recommend
