At the dawn of the new millennium, Japan is in a state of near-collapse. Unemployment is at an all-time high, and violence amongst the nation's youth is spiralling out of control. With school children boycotting their lessons and physically abusing their teachers, a beleagured and near-defeated government decides to introduce a radical new measure: the Battle Royale Act. Overseen by a former teacher, (Takeshi Kitano), and requiring that a randomly chosen school class be taken to a deserted island and forced to fight each other to the death, the Act dictates that only one pupil be allowed to survive the punishment. He or she will return, not as the victor, but as the ultimate proof of the lengths to which the government are prepared to go to curb the tide of juvenile disobediance. Likened to Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange' by many critics, this explosive film shocked a nation with its violent portrayal of a society in ruins.

40 out of 100 Battle Royale
Michael from Dublin, 26 Jan 2008
If you're in the mood for a cross-cultural laugh, get this one. It's gory, wildly improbable even within it's own extreme logic, and quite lacking in your typical redeeming qualities. And it's kids killing each other! As someone interested in Japanese culture and enjoying shoot-em up action flicks I liked this. Just get it looking for a good time and a few laughs. You'll be pleased. This film is, by the way, pretty well known. The kind of thing you /know/ Tarantino must have loved.

Full on and fantastic. If you are looking for a movie that will take you to an extreme then this is for you. This movie is still fresh and original.

This battle for ultimate survival is one that shouldn't be missed. An amazing film about many things, including learning who to trust.

0 out of 10 Battle Royale
Sheila from Dublin, 19 Dec 2007
An awful film! Full of gratuitous violence, this film tries unsuccessfully to make a social commentary on youth, state violence, relationships.... the message is lost in the bloodbath. If it wasn't painful to watch, it would be boring

If you don't think you'd enjoy asian schoolkids on an island killing each other then this one isn't for you! You go into this one knowing EXACTLY what to expect. A good film for what it is.

35 out of 100 Bloody, Gory and good.
John from Donegal, 22 Sep 2009
To cope with the increasingly violent adolesents, the Government comes up with a scheme to Cull the population. A televised To-the-Death competition for school classes. Gruesome, unintentionally funny, and in places very good. If you like lots of gore, then you'll love this. I'm sure an American version is in the pipeline!!!
