In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out - detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple's frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost - lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves - as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love.

40 out of 100 Babel
Martin from Clare, 04 Jun 2007
Very Good. Very well made. Good lesson in communication and highlighting inequality. Could have done without Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.

0 out of 10 BABEL
imelda from Kildare, 22 Aug 2007
Should be renamed DRIVEL. This is the worst film I have ever seen. over 2 hours of very little dialogue, most of which is moroccan and Japanese with subtitles. English is muttered. Scenes are endless with dramatic music, slow motion and flashing scenes. there are 4/5 different stories going on loosely connected, however the story of the Japanese deaf/dumb girl is totally unnecessary to the plot, it seems to me to be thrown in for the reason of providing a bit of tittilation. AWFUL

40 out of 100 Better than expected
MARK from Dublin, 11 Jun 2007
Dont expect much and you will really enjoy this movie. Not sure if it was the mood I was in but I thought this was compulsive viewing. It reminded me of Traffic a bit, not as good but is much better than most people have said before. I think it was too hyped before, Well worth a watch.

Superb movie with the various strands of the plot interwoven to perfection. The movies quickly draws you in so that you really care about the characters and their predicaments. Rent it now for gawd's sake.

0 out of 10 Boring rubbish
John from Wicklow, 15 Oct 2007
The two things I learnt from this film are 1 don't take a holiday in Moroccan desert as the locals are inclined to take pot shots at tourists, and 2 never let a Mexican babysit for you (these people are unreliable) I don't know if this is what the makers intended or not. There is also a subplot involving a deaf-mute Japanese girl that looked tacked on and didn't add anything to the story. Also it goes on for what seemed like three weeks. If you liked the english patient rent it. One to avoid

30 out of 100 Misses the target...
Ciaran from Dublin, 22 May 2007
Different people will react very differently to this. It's long, overdrawn and has a message to tell but what that message is may not be so clear. Maybe it is that small actions can have massive implications around the world (somewhat like the 'butterfly effect') or maybe the point is that the poor people come off bad while the wealthier folk get off lighter. Whatever it is, it is hidden inside this murky drama that I found hard to really get into.

30 out of 100 Babel - worthy effort
lisa from Louth, 10 Jan 2008
I had heard much about this movie in advance and new that it was an interwoven piece with a strong ensemble cast. It was worth watching definitely - it's a very well made film but I found it very difficult to become emotionally involved with any of the characters, but, maybe you are supposed to get a sense of detachment and isolation when watching; it's that kind of movie. When it ends you know it was worth watching but it doesn't make you go WOW!

30 out of 100 Babel
Mandy from Dublin, 14 Jun 2007
Some people didn't think there was much of a story to this film but there is. It's a bit drawn out at times but the reason why i liked it is because it's like a something that would happen in reality in real life and how things can get twisted the wrong way and there was no special effects as such which was a nice change it was all reality. i thought it was fairly good.
