 Angels In America Part 2

Academy Award-winners Al Pacino, Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson lead an all-star cast in a 6 hour HBO Films event, written by Tony Kushner based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The film tells the story of a gay man (Louis Ironson) struggling with his compassion and fidelity as his partner (Prior Walter) faces the spectre of AIDS and dreamlike visitations by a prophet seeking Angel. Louis becomes involved with a N.Y. Supreme Court Clerk (Joe Pitt) who wrestles with his career and sexual repression as his marriage to his Valium-addicted wife (Harper Pitt) unravels. Motivated to help her son, the clerk's Mormon mother (Hannah Pitt) comes from Salt Lake to the intimidating world of New York, while a controversial and legendary lawyer, Roy Cohn (a fictional re-creation of the infamous American conservative ideologue who died of AIDS in 1986), attempts to enlist the clerk in his defense as he is ravaged by a hidden disease and the demons of his own hypocrisy. Spanning the extremes of comedy and tragedy, love and betrayal, and life and death, Angels in America is a journey through the landscape of despair and hope that defines America at the end of the 20th Century.

35 out of 100 Amazing Angels of America
Gary from Dublin, 05 Jul 2007
This drama is an amazing piece of work. Although I was sent this before the first part, I was able to follow this very well. Its about the story of AIDS in the 80s and the effect it has on a group of people. This stars Meryl Streep, Al Pacino and Emma Thompson and is a moving drama of a gay circle of characters and their family and how they all become interlinked by the effect of AIDS. Its a colourful and dark drama in one that should not be missed at all.

30 out of 100 not as good as part 1
Andy from Westmeath, 06 Jul 2007
I have to say I was disappointed - mainly with the ending - and it was not nearly as good as part 1. I think it would definitely help to see it in right order - I would have hated to have watched part 2 first. Al Pacino, Mary Louise Parker, Meryl Streep all superb but the script was weak towards the end. A bit contrived.

40 out of 100 Unexpectedly fab
John from Donegal, 24 Sep 2007
After really enjoying the first installment, I eagerly awaited the second, and wasn't disapointed. The acting is excellent, the special effects scenes are surreal, though I felt Emma Thompson overacted terribly a couple of times, and the ending was well thought out and touching, though if you are of a cynical nature, you may find the ending a bit too much to take. I can understand why this took so many awards.

10 out of 100 Overblown
Emma from Dublin, 10 Apr 2011
I had high hopes for this one, and although I liked some of the writing, I found the whole thing over-long, over-budgeted and overblown. Some of the humour and the Jeffrey Wright character were a saving grace, but in all it went on way too long and was about as subtle as being bashed around the head with a baseball bat.

Have been searching for this series for years and was not disappointed. So different, so thought provoking, such brilliant performances - incredibly gripping throughout
