Stuck in the mud
Philip from Dublin, 19 Dec 2009
Its gotta be admitted that this film is a hard slog. Its worth it in the end because of the stunning imagery and some brilliant sequences by one of the great Masters of the cinema. But its also painfully allegorical, requires a lot of knowledge of Russian history and iconography and is very slow going at times. It features episodes from the live of a monk and artist, trying to maintain his vision of goodness as he lives through the horrors of medieval Russia.

epic
Brian from Dublin, 07 Aug 2008
its not light viewing alright but some really great set pieces - the long, single shot at the start of the parachute flight, the casting of the bell, the taking of vladimir. Has a fairly gruesome torture scene, though. Has the feel of an "important film" - in a good sense

visceral

this film manages to imbue a stark, bleak tonality with a very palpable richness. it is very textural and environment is evoked very physically. it is very loosely based around Andrei Rublev and like other Tarkovsky films uses discrete situations and lives on which to hang explorations of archetypes.

All right, its heavy going. But the 2 discs dont have to be watched on the one occasion.
If you are interested in things Russian, any particllarly in this countrys history watch this movie...its epic.
The black/white format adds to the atmosphere.

A Toughie!

This film is quite the epic! The story is long and required a few nights to get through it all. The film is worth a watch, especially for the very extravagant sets. My motivation for watching it though was as a prelude for The Stalker.
