In 1914 a group of fresh-faced and idealistic German schoolboys are goaded by their chauvinistic schoolmaster to troop off to the 'Glorious War'. With the fire and patriotism of youth they sign up, however, their disenchantment begins during the brutal basic training. Later, as they board the train to the frontline, they see first-hand evidence of the terrible injuries already suffered there--their first glimpse of the harsh reality of war. Once in the trenches, the boys begin to fall one by one

I enjoyed really this film as it had a very strong anti-war message.Although it did not have the same special effects as Saving Private Ryan its message was still as strong. Also it showed it from a German soldiers point of view which was refreshing.Overall i would recommend this film.

50 out of 100 Tragic, but brilliant
John from Donegal, 24 Oct 2009
Set during the first world war, told from the German soldiers side, a class of students, egged on by their teacher enroll en-masse for the army and are shown the true horrors of war. I was sent the 1930 version and not the one filmed in the 1979, but I was glad because it was brilliant. Well worth watching, the tragedy of war is brought to life more when you realise that some of the actors would have gone through the real thing as it was only filmed 12 years after the war ended.

This move is 78 years old and it was probably considered excellent at the time of release. I was disappointed, I actually thought it was the more recent film of the same name so I was unhappy even before it started. sorry, it just didn't do it for me.
