Wade Whitehouse (Nick Nolte) is at a turning point in his life. People order him around everywhere he turns, from his demanding boss, to his ex-wife who won't let him see his daughter, to his ageing, violent alcoholic father (Academy Award winner James Coburn). For Wade the future looks bleak, until his quiet New Hampshire town is shattered by the death of a Boston union official in a deer hunt led by Wade's friend Jack. The incident is written off as an accident, but Wade suspects that Jack is guilty of murder. Solving the crime becomes Wade's obsession and his last opportunity to redeem himself in the eyes of the town, his ex-wife, his father, and - most of all - himself. Featuring an impressive star cast, Affliction is a tense and compelling psycho-drama from Paul Schrader, screenwriter of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and director of American Gigolo.

15 out of 100 Affliction

My goodness, I had read the book some years ago and I really enjoyed it-but the film was dreadful in comparision. The cast line-up promises the viewer a great watch, but to be honest I endured this film....

25 out of 100 Slow
Caoimhe from Dublin, 10 Sep 2007
Slow moving and a bit pointless, I found myself waiting for some sort of a plot to kick in but it didn't happen. Nick Nolte's mumbling was a bit irritating he was very hard to understand / hear a lot of the time. His deteriorating relationship with his daughter is devastatingly sad and well acted, but aside from that I was quite disappointed. It's watchable but nothing to write home about.

Bit dated at this stage. Don't rent this if you wanna get good emotions. Tragic tale of bad childhood, and the scars that never heal!

Dont rent this if your already feeling a little down -a depressing tale of the vicious circle of male violence within families and generations.Well acted and very convincing however. It is described as a thriller and there is a mystery in it but frustratingly its not solved. Also none of the characters are likeable which makes it tough to watch. Would I recommend it? - not sure really ,maybe if you have a comedy to watch after.

35 out of 100 Affliction

Whilst I thought Nick Nolte's role was amazing, I didn't enjoy the movie overall. The anger and psychological damage to the Wade character was very upsetting and not easy viewing. However, while personally not entertainment, I have to acknowledge the strength and power of the main performances - particularly, the Father figure. Terse drama with violent undercurrent.

David from Dublin, 11 Aug 2007
Nick Nolte features as a smalltown cop investigating a suspicious hunting accident, all the while navigating the troubled waters of his failed marriage, the resulting disintegrating relationship with his daughter and his childhood issues surrounding his father. Brilliant movie.
