Tennessee Williams based his screenplay on Oscar Saul's adaptation of Williams' own Pulitzer Prize-winning play set in a grimy New Orleans project. The story of the fragile sentimentalism of a woman who visits her sister only to be taunted mercilessly by her childish brother-in-law. This classic film garnered 12 Academy Award Nominations (including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Screeplay), winning 4 including Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter), and Best Supporting Actor (Karl Malden).

50 out of 100 If you see one film this year.

A 'Southern Belle' stays with her sister in New Orleans and decends into madness. A stunning film, full of hidden (and not so hidden) desires. Vivien Leigh steals the whole thing and rightly got an Oscar for it. Marlon Brando is also really good as the animalistic brother-in-law, but he is too handsome for me to hate his character as I should. The other Actors also play their parts brilliantly. The film cleverly glosses over the Gay & Rape themes in the original play.

45 out of 100 Absolutely brilliant
Brian from Dublin, 23 Aug 2011
Now this is *real* quality. After watching so much schlock hidden behind gimmicks/cgi/big names etc, its great to a film with an interesting plot, great dialogue & great acting. It *is* a film of a play & looks like that (not many set locations etc) so don't surprised by that. Still, its a long time since I've come across a film this good.

45 out of 100 Great

Marlon Brando gives a great performance in this, exuding menace and machismo. Overall a very good film. My sympathy with Blanche was reduced by how annoying and pretentious she is. She would drive me to maliciousness too.

25 out of 100 Good Old Movie!

This movie is great if you love the oldies! It's a good enough plot to keep you interested and that over dramatic acting is pretty entertaining. Marlon Brando is extremely hot!

I found this film a little bit difficult to watch, cos the acting was a bit corny and the characters were strange. Marlon Brando quite dishy in it though!

I had forgotten how good Brando was in this. Really enjoyed it again. Pure nostalgia for Brando and Leigh fans. All actors were splendid.
