A Short Film About Love (1988)

Kieslowski's 'A Short Film About Love' was expanded from one of the most lyrical episodes in 'Dekalog', his celebrated cycle of short films based on the Ten Commandments. A young man falls in love with an older woman who lives across the courtyard in the same Warsaw apartment block. He watches her and her succession of lovers until she becomes aware of his spying and confronts him with a sexual invitation.

25 out of 100 A Short Film About Stalking!
Les from Dublin, 13 Sep 2008
If you like to snuggle up with a box of chocs and cry your eyes out at a good love story, then this is not for you. This is a well made film, be in no doubt about that, but it's an art house film, not a bodice ripper. For what it's worth, I think this movie has been given the wrong title. This is not about love. This is about obsession. This is about infatuation. To suggest that this is about love, is to degrade love. To quote the bard, "Love is not love, which alters when it alteration finds."

40 out of 100 A stunning piece of work by Kieslowski
Martin from Dublin, 30 Jul 2007
The story is wonderfully paced and the acting beautifully understated. The muted and gray colour palette used throughout works well in reflecting both a social understanding of where this young male is coming from and his emotional state of mind. Obvious parallels can be drawn bewteen this movie and the likes of Powell's 'Peeping Tom' and Hitchcock's 'Rear Window' in regard to the voyeuristic nature of the fim but the story here is far more simplistic and benifits from this.

I can't say I enjoyed this film, it was very slow and quite boring.

20 out of 100 Intelligent and Thoughtful
Elizabeth from Dublin, 15 Jan 2009
As my first experience of Polish film I thought this had an intelligent and mature tone. The grey atmosphere of the environment where it is shot is well conveyed. The title is mis-leading and the characters seem incapable of genuine love; the female protaganist is weary of love, and is flippant in her interaction with men and toys with the male protaganist's obsession with her. Enjoyed it, but as a 'arty' foreign film, this is not a love story for a general audience

15 out of 100 A Short Film About Love
Frances from Clare, 14 Mar 2011
A creepy adolescent spends his time obsessively watching & stalking an older woman. Obviously I must have missed something as I know it's been critically reviewed but it left me cold & wondering what the point was if there was any point.

Beautifully acted, very enjoyable. Yes, it is slow moving but if that's what you want get the typical hollywood blockbuster.
