A Short Film About Killing (1988)

'A Short Film About Killing' is based on the Fifth Commandment: 'Thou Shalt Not Kill', and is a psychological vivisection of the brutal and senseless murder of a taxi-driver by a young drifter, with no explanation offered, and no extenuating circumstances given. Kieslowski demonstrates his skill and dexterity as a master of suspense, keeping tensions rising and viewers in knots, producing a searing, powerful moral indictment of capital punishment. Directed by Kieslowski, the director of the 'Three Colours Trilogy', 'A Short Film About Killing' won numerous awards including the Jury Prize at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.

35 out of 100 Not for everyone
Joanne from Meath, 26 Jan 2009
This film is not for everyone, but I quite enjoyed it. It is very different more to be watched for the shock value (the killing is really quite clinical & gruesome) and the 'arty' way in which the camera work is done. Not for you if you are looking for an entertaining 90 mins but if you're in the market for s'thing different, this could be it.

40 out of 100 Grim, but magnificent film making
Philip from Dublin, 15 Jan 2012
A true classic of European film making, this is not easy viewing. It follows a lost and disoriented young man as he plots a motiveless murder of an unpleasant taxi driver, and then sees how the wheels of 'justice' moves. Its not a simple film - none of the characters are particularly sympathetic, but neither are they beyond help or redemption either. The film is superbly made, as you'd expect, and its well worth your while, just don't expect easy entertainment.

15 out of 100 Don't even think about it
Steven from Dublin, 07 May 2008
I wasted my Saturday afternoon watching this movie. The movie deals with murder and capital punishment in Poland (bleak-to say the least) and is quite graphic in parts. In essence is does exactly what is says on the tin-a short film about killing. The director also uses a dark filter-which will encourage you to adjust your TV brightness.

40 out of 100 Different
Brian from Dublin, 06 Feb 2012
Very good if you're in the right frame of mind. Gritty but I found the camera filter effect nice instead of ugly. Don't see how it should really change anyone's opinion on capital punishment despite what reviewers say
