"A Serious Man" is the story of an ordinary man's search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and "F-Troop" is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous colleagues, Sy Ableman, who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry. Larry's unemployable brother Arthur is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. While his wife and Sy Ableman blithely make new domestic arrangements, and his brother becomes more and more of a burden, an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry's chances for tenure at the university. Also, a graduate student seems to be trying to bribe him for a passing grade while at the same time threatening to sue him for defamation. Plus, the beautiful woman next door torments him by sunbathing nude. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person -- a mensch -- a serious man?

emmet from Dublin, 19 Apr 2010
Save yourself a wasted night in and leave this one down in the basement and filed under S! One of the worst ,most drawn out ,mind churningly boring piece of over hyped and over bloated cinema I have seen in years. Normall these guys produce something memorable ,on this occasion the aliens must have abducted them or else they produced this to see just what crap can actually sell. YOU HAF BEEN WARNED!

5 out of 100 A Seriously Dull Film
Brendan from Dublin, 24 May 2011
I love the Cohen Brothers. Well, I love and hate them. Loved Fargo, hated Blood Simple. Loved Miller's Crossing and No Country, hated Barton Fink. This film is just dull. A man suffers Job-like torment. Everything bad that can happen happens. But he is spineless and quiet and mever takes a stand. You cannot relate to him. He's taken for granted and taken advantage of. It's well acted but dull. Dull, dull, dull. Best avoided unless you fancy a REALLY quiet night in.

30 out of 100 Good but could have been great.
Seamus from Monaghan, 27 Oct 2010
After three quarters of an hour I thought this film was one of the best I'd seen, by one hour 15 I was tired of it. What I took to be a slow measured setting of the scene was in fact the film and it just didn't move as it could have. There were three great characters as well as a few great story lines intertwinning and yet none of them got the detail they deserved so instead we got a mish mash of what could have been three great films.

25 out of 100 Has promise. Looking forward to seeing it finished
Alan from Dublin, 11 Aug 2010
Quirky and with great characters like all Coen films, this one is just a little too self indulgent. I don't need to be spoonfed and have everything wrapped up neatly at the end of a film but the out of the blue finish in A Serious Man just takes things too far. Smacks of "we're so successful now we can do what we like". Too many loose ends even for a Coen film.
