What does a scanner see? A Scanner Darkly is set in suburban Orange County, California in a future where America has lost the war on drugs. When one reluctant undercover cop is ordered to start spying on his friends, he is launched on a paranoid journey into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode. It is a cautionary tale of drug use based on the novel by Philip K. Dick and his own experiences. Like a graphic novel come to life, A Scanner Darkly uses live action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process (interpolated rotoscoping) to create a haunting, highly stylized vision of the future.

45 out of 100 A Scanner Darkly
Wolf from Clare, 30 Apr 2007
All the hallmarks of a great Phillip.K.Dick tale, like Blade Runner and Minority Report - this is an excellent approach. I wouldn't normally like animation, but for this film it really works. Very 'counter-culture'. I really loved it. fantastic cast too.

45 out of 100 Superb

One of the most intriguing, thought provoking and downright unusual films you're ever likely to see, A Scanner Darkly is an absolute must see. It will take you a while to get in to so please ignore the silly people who "did not get" it or turned off half way through, the amazing style of animation over fantastic performances from this great cast adds to the sense of seeing something unique. Robert Downey Jr as usual shines but Keanu and Woody Harrelson are also superb. Terrific film. 9 out of 10

50 out of 100 better than fear and loathing (kinda, in a way)
Stuart from Dublin, 17 Mar 2008
Amazing movie, flat-out brilliant. The animation over film is used to great effect, making the characters paranoia, confusion and disconnection from reality very real. As a "drug culture" movie it is unparalleled, mostly in its ability to lead the viewer through the breakdown of a characters sense of self due to prolonged abuse of the psychoactive "substance D", where you really feel bits of your own mind melting away in sympathy. Also quite funny in parts, though a fairly dark humour.

40 out of 100 Truly original
Ciaran from Dublin, 16 Jul 2007
I found this to be a highly interesting affair altogether. A good story about the effects of drugs and the people who push them, the animation only adds to the show. Good characters, a stunning visual style and a plot to pay attention to made this a very worthwhile effort I felt.

Pamela from Dublin, 31 Jul 2007
Really enjoyed this film, was a bit iffy at first because of the animation, wasn't sure if some parts were real or not! But once I got into it, excellent film, excellent animation! Look up on how it was made, very interesting!

45 out of 100 'A Scanner Darkly' pretty good.
Declan from Dublin, 21 Dec 2008
If you Philip K Dick stuff, you'll like this movie. The story and characters are a bit crazy, but it is dealing with a drug situation so it suits it. The animation is excellent and I loved trying to figure who the actors were doing the voices. The ending is very good, worth watching the whole film for. Makes you think afterwards.

25 out of 100 Unsettling
Conor from Louth, 04 Apr 2011
I actually felt kinda miserable and depressed after watching this. An original script, supported by a decent cast - that didn't need the unique cartoon/graphic style. All that did was take away from the overall story. It would've been more enjoyable as a straight up shooting, and save the special effects for another day.
