 A Ma Soeur

Anais is twelve and seems to be carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her large body acts as a protective shield from which she processes the world and her own douleur. Either forced to hide behind the scenes or sometimes simply made an outcast by others, Anais finds herself playing the role of observer. During the annual family summer vacation, Anais has her first brush with sexual awakening, albeit by proxy, via her beautiful fifteen-year-old sister Elena with whom she has a love-hate relationship. At a cafe the two girls meet Fernando, a young law student from Italy. One night, Fernando sneaks into their holiday home and Anais, who shares a room with her sister, watches unnoticed as Fernando and Elena cajole, grapple, romance and submit to passion. In the end Anais turns over and cries herself to sleep. The whole story comes out into the open a few days later when Fernando's mother pays a visit to discuss a missing ring with their mother.

40 out of 100 certainly interesting, worth a look
john from Meath, 03 Jul 2007
quite a different and controversial "coming of age" drama than most people will expect (unless you are familiar with the directors other works). Not a lot of plot, but the characters and situations are very real. Be warned though, this copy of the film is heavily edited, its actually missing about 2 minutes of footage from the ending. Still, it probably wont affect most peoples view of the film, you will either love it or hate it.

30 out of 100 Interesting French film
Gaven from Dublin, 19 Jun 2009
Interesting story of two french sisters on holiday. Like most french films there's a bit of nudity / sex here and the french are less prudish about underage nudity / sex than we are. Quite quick and slightly shocking ending too although it's a pity this is the cencored version which is confusing compared to uncut original.

25 out of 100 Disturbingly haunting
Orla from Clare, 16 Dec 2008
The film ends shockingly, and it lingered with me for days afterwards. Its pace is slow, right up until the last 10 mins. If you like unusual, unexpected films then this is for you. If you prefer a fast paced engaging film, you will hate this!

5 out of 100 Mmmm
Tim from Carlow, 12 Aug 2008
it's an 18s film that probably shouldn't have had the sex scene so to make it a 15s. Then those of that age might appreciate it. The ending leaves you void as to what the film was about. I'd leave that out too for the 15s. Not recommended.

35 out of 100 A Ma Soeur
Mary from Dublin, 21 Jul 2009
I enjoyed this film. It's honest, quirky, funny and intriguing. I'm dying to know what the end of it all means. This is the most realistic film about teenage understanding of love, intimacy and growing up.
