Alfred Hitchcock considered The 39 Steps to be one of his favourite films, partly because it launched his classic theme of the innocent man on the run from villains and lawmen. Robert Donat stars as Richard Hannay in this freely adapted version of John Buchan's story. Despite repeated remakes Hitchcock's riveting original remains unequalled.

10 out of 100 Very dated thriller that's not very thrilling
John from Dublin, 11 Feb 2008
Richard Hannay sees an attempt on a woman's life, and rather than tell the police, steals her handbag to get in contact and hear her story of stolen missile plans being smuggled out of the country. When she is murdered by the nameless bad guys at his flat, he goes on the run from the police to find her contact and the stolen plans in the Scottish highlands. If you like ridiculous plots, ham-acting, cheerful-whistle-while-you-run heroes and 50's style casual sexism, this is for you.

40 out of 100 Thorughly Enjoyable.
Barry from Dublin, 12 May 2008
Hitchcok's original. If you are a Hitchcock fan, you know what you are getting. If you are a fan of BBC2 midweek matinees, you know what you are getting. If you are new to Hitchcock, you might be better off starting with his latter American catalogue, and work you're way back. This was an inspiring film, with almost every scene copied repeatedly in many films sense.

30 out of 100 The 39 Steps

Enjoyable for a wet afternoon. Kenneth Moore gives an over rated performance in this 1959 version of the movie.
