Opening in the year 2046, in which a man named Tak (Takuya Kimura) attempts to persuade wjw1967 (Faye Wong) to travel back in time with him, the film soon shifts to the year 1966 in which Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), a struggling author, asks the woman he loves, Su Li-Zhen (Gong Li) to sail with him from Singapore to Hong Kong on Christmas Eve. She declines, and over the next three years, we return to Chow Mo-Wan on December 24 as he finds himself with another woman each year: lighthearted Lulu (Carina Lau) in 1967, eccentric hotel heiress Wang Jing Wen (Faye Wong) in 1968, and high-class prostitute Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi) in 1969.
In time, Chow Mo-Wan and Wang Jing Wen become re-acquainted, and a love affair blooms, but the fates are not on their side...
Hong Kong-based filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai moves back and forth in time as he re-examines and amplifies the themes from his film 'In the Mood For Love' in this offbeat romantic drama.

Evocative

Follow-up, of sorts, to the director's previous movie 'In The Mood For Love', 2046 again shows the skills of this fine film-maker. Visually splendid, the story can be convoluted but that's rather to be expected. Requires attention of the viewer to really appreciate it.

Brilliant

A slow and at times confusing start to this film which combusts into life when Zhang Ziyi takes the screen. Multiple story arcs playing on the theme of love challenge and reward the viewer.

Like Haruki Murakami novel...

If yuo have ever read Haruki Murakami, you probably would understand... From the beginning I thought that it based on one of the novels.... ;-) It's a good quality movie, but it will be too difficult to understand for certain audience :-)))

Challenging but fulfilling
Emmett from Dublin, 23 Feb 2010
A slow and methodical start to this movie leaves you often lost as the pieces of a truly beautiful portrayal begin to unfold. A slow pacing expertly draws together as the multiple aspects of love and solitude combine rewarding you a sense wonder and catharsis.
I would readily recommend this to anyone wanting to watch a thoughtful foreign (subtitled) movie. Not for light casual watching.

Bore-fest

Maybe I was missing something, maybe I tried to watch this too late at night.... Whatever, I must have missed something because I gave up before halfway. I had no real care for the main charcter, and less for the story that was being told
