A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission while hiding the truth from the public. Later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant object--but something goes terribly wrong. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Director and coscreenwriter (with Arthur C. Clarke) Stanley Kubrick has created a visual and aural spectacle that stands as one of the greatest achievements ever put on celluloid. The film begins with the "Dawn of Man" segment, about the evolution of apes, and then ventures into the future, taking a look at what the world might be like in the first year of the 21st century. Kubrick's film is a triumph of technological storytelling, a marvel of stunning sets and a brilliant soundtrack with the power to overwhelm and mystify. Long dialogue-free scenes sparkle with indelible images and powerful orchestral music, culminating in an unforgettable, inscrutable tale of birth and rebirth, human evolution and artificial intelligence, the past and the future.

25 out of 100 I really tried
Paul from Dublin, 05 Aug 2007
I wanted to like this movie, I really did. There are some fantastic scenes and so many moments from this movie have made there way into pop-culture. However it just moved a bit too slow for my liking. You really can't argue with how beautifully shot it is, but long periods with no move in the plot (or even dialogue), while conveying the vastness of space, really doesn't help draw you in. This one just wasn't for me.

loved every min, real long, you need a good poker night going on in the back ground with a few smokes... this is a winner... put it on a big screen and let the journey begin :)

15 out of 100 Exactly as Paul from Dubln said
Niamh from Wicklow, 07 Oct 2010
I always try to see "classic" movies. but i was dissapointed and bored. I dont like slow movies and this is the slowest film ever. I think you have to be stoned or philisophically minded to get this movie, some images were amazing but the story was far to slow and boring for me. on the other hand my boyfriend loved it but he's a ponderer who always asks what thr meaning of life is!

5 out of 100 crap
gerard from Dublin, 03 Dec 2007
There has to be something wrong with you if you can sit through this whole film without fast forwarding any of it, it is annoying and Stanley Kubrick was obviously totally insane
