Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't. This post modern love story is never what we expect it to be--it's thorny yet exhilarating, funny and sad, a twisted journey of highs and lows that doesn't quite go where we think it will. When Tom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days "together" to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately lead him to finally rediscover his true passions in life.

This film was excellent from start to finish. Great actors playing real and identifiable characters. The scene of reality played against expectation is one of the best movie scenes ever. Practically everyone will identify with the romantic dreams that play out in their mind versus the actual harsh reality of life. Really loved that this film didn't have a typical Hollywood rom-com narrative-much more refreshing.

20 out of 100 I'd rather spend 2 hours in Ikea
martha from Waterford, 13 May 2010
Clumsy, awkward, tryhard, cliched, slow, overly whimsical plot, characters and scenarios carried by a decent soundtrack, clever music to motion, and visually appealing aesthetics (wardrobe, colour, and set design). Sure, it looks pretty, but what does it do?! What is it for!? A very drawn out but strangely successful advertisement for Ikea. (Oh, and look out for the numerous and ANNOYING references and nods to other, better, more credible offbeat/arthouse films. Can you say earnest an

A very realistic look at relationships. This movie is a breath of fresh air from the typical hollwood rom-com. Yes it is a romance and a comedy, but it gives a more realistic outcome to the relationship. There is no happy ever after for them but there is a happy ending. I think the gem of this movie and its biggest comedy factor is how effectively it demonstrates how easy it is to create unrealistic assumptions and expectations, and how they can hinder the simple enjoyment of the relationship as it is in every moment.

Mehh.. that is what i would say about this one....everyone said it was great this and great that.....meh....i wasn't in love with it....it seemed to be a trying a little too hard really to be quirky and cool and alternative..... watchable...but not my favourite.....didn't warm to the story...didn't warm to the characters...wasn't thrilled with the journey of the plot..... ah.....it's worth a watch...that is about it...

35 out of 100 Refreshingly sharp

Its nice to see a romantic film which doesn't insist on a happy ending or some notion of there being someone we are 'meant to be with'. We know it doesn't end well because we are shown the story of a romance out of sequence. Its a bit of a pity that the film makers are too in love with the gimmickry of showing the romance out of sequence, and they are also too fond of cliches, such as the smart alecky little sister. But its a cut above most romance films.
